Godlis, ‘Patti Smith, Bowery’, 1976 (printed later), Aperture Benefit Auction 2014

David Godlis’ photographs have become synonymous with the history of American punk music. Black-and-white images of Blondie, The Ramones, Talking Heads, and other 1970s bands make up the bulk of his body of work. With a gauzy, nighttime aesthetic that recalls Brassaï or Kertész, Godlis captured the reeling, romantic energy of a new generation of heroic musicians.
