Gregory Scott creates layered multimedia worlds that prompt the viewer to ask “what if?” The artist’s early paintings were based on photographs, a relationship he took further in photographs wherein propped-up canvases were imposed into scenes or over figures as a way of “introducing the artist’s hand and imagination into the world of the literal photograph.” He has continued to explore this nuanced relationship between media in his more recent works, in which oil painting, photography, and video combine to “explore the idea of making a painting move.” In these works, based on Pop Art, postcards, and the greeting-card landscapes of Thomas Kinkade, Scott explores the stereotypes of art and how it’s presented, with a sense of humor and awareness of how his illusions are created.
