About Hans van der Meer

Photographer Hans van der Meer looks to the details of the landscape for clues into collective identities and desires. Beginning in 1995, van der Meer has turned his focus toward European soccer pitches and the enthusiastic amateurs who play on them. Unlike most modern sports photography, which prizes close-ups on the action, van der Meer uses a Fuji six-by-nine camera to shoot wide shots of fields with telling details behind them—the poetry of movement dwarfed by the space. For other works, he has visited town squares throughout Holland, documenting the country’s changing architecture and the pastiche of styles that sit side by side (using a stepladder to get a slightly elevated perspective); he has also traveled the American West, which he photographed in a panoramic style.
