From photographs and paintings of eroticized female subjects, to bold mixed-media collages featuring LED lights, to graphic murals on the streets of New York, Harif Guzman creates works with a Pop-meets-street aesthetic and an affinity for humorous subversion. Guzman draws influence form his father—a printer and typesetter—as well as his adopted home of New York, where he moved at the age of five. The artist sees his practice, in which he transforms humble materials into powerful artworks, as a parallel of his life’s transformation—from a shop worker, to a skater and graffitist, to a world-renowned contemporary artist working across disciplines (that now include video, curating, and publishing).

The series Romance of Petroleum is very important to me, because I feel like everything around us is fabricated in oil. It's based on man's romance with oil. After a while, the romance isn't about money anymore. It's about the need to find it. It's a natural fascination.
