Henryk Szydlowski
Portrait of the colourful Creatures, 2013

Oil painter, draughtsman, and multimedia artist Henryk Szydlowski creates imaginative worlds populated by a collection of personal symbols such as birds, trees, puppets, and people. Known for his command of composition and technique and his careful preparatory drawings, Szydlowski merges rectangular and circular color planes atop patterned backgrounds to create images that are at once biomorphic and, upon closer inspection, purely abstract combinations of geometry. While a committed traditionalist in painting, the artist has experimented heavily with photography and video, combining them with symbols and designs taken from his paintings. Szydlowski has also developed a printing technique, called “Polprint” in honor of his Polish heritage.
