Herald Nix, ‘Untitled/Red/Grey/Landscape’, 2012, Wilding Cran Gallery

About Herald Nix

Herald Nix’s highly gestural, abstract landscapes are a modernist take on traditional Canadian nature paintings. Nix’s oeuvre is marked by oil paint, discordant palettes, and thick brushstrokes. He creates small, repetitive patterns out of painting’s simplest, most fundamental elements—color and line—creating larger images that suggest the boundlessness of the natural world. Although Nix looks outward for his inspiration and subject matter, his expressionistic forms also direct the viewer inward, offering them a glimpse into the controlled chaos of the artist’s mind.
