Hernan Bas, ‘His is the only known species to mimic a flower’, 2017, Perrotin

About Hernan Bas

Inspired by literary sources including Arthur Rimbaud, Oscar Wilde, and Joris-Karl Huysmans, Hernan Bas paints boys on the threshold of sexual self-discovery. Located in lush, gothic landscapes and painted with abundant brushstrokes of synthetic colors, Bas’s delicate, androgynous subjects experience a range of passions. For Tapestry (2005), Bas created a dyed wool carpet depicting a young man languishing in a swan-led boat, a classically romantic motif rendered in the style of digital images in a caustic mix of purples and greens.
