The bustling and colorful Avenue Massena in Nice is the subject of this brilliantly hued composition by French artist Hugues Claude Pissarro. The celebrated painter's post-impressionist ideals of light and color are on full display in the brilliantly hued composition, which lends a dynamic vibrancy to the legendary buildings of the Mediterranean town. The grandson of the great Impressionist Camille Pissarro, it is little wonder that the artist beautifully captures the spirited energy of this historic avenue with such skill and brilliance.
Coming from a family of artists, Pissarro seemed destined to pick up the paintbrush, and he did so at a young age. Learning his craft from his father, he exhibited his first works at the young age of 14 and later studied in Paris. Like many of his family predecessors, the scope of his work and talent is vast, ranging from engraving to lithography, from publishing to painting. His reputation as a painter quickly spread, resulting in a White House commission in 1959 to paint the portrait of President Eisenhower. While his style has evolved throughout his career, he is best known for his brightly colored impressionist works like the present piece, which has been exhibited around the world since 1985 and is highly collected.
The painting is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
