Le Gondolier du Soir
(The Evening Gondolier)
Signed “H. Claude Pissarro” (lower right)
Oil on canvas
A single gondolier dominates the foreground of this brilliantly hued composition by French painter Hugues Claude Pissarro. The work is a stunning addition to the Pissarro family legacy, which began with Pissarro's legendary Impressionist grandfather, the great Camille Pissarro. Boasting a captivating Post-Impressionist style, this oil on canvas demonstrates Pissarro's remarkable talent for capturing the light and atmosphere of a scene in each and every feathery brushstroke. Under a turquoise-blue sky, Pissarro's Venice glistens with unmistakable majesty as he deftly captures the grandeur of this lagoon city.
Hailing from a long lineage of painters, Pissarro's artistic talents were cultivated at an early age. He exhibited his first works at the young age of 14, and later studied in Paris at the École du Louvre and École Normale Supérieure. A 1959 White House commission to paint the portrait of President Eisenhower cemented his reputation as an artist of renown, and his work has since been featured in important exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States. While his style has evolved throughout his career, he is best known for his brightly colored works such as the present piece, which are highly collected.
The painting is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist.
