The 10 Most Desired Objects from Design Miami/
The concept here is taxonomy and the object is a lamp. Reduction is what makes Collection of light all the most fascinating. It is simply a collection of LEDs that, assembled in a pristine cabinet, constitute a lamp. The aim is to re-create the aura of an authentic collection, exhibiting each individual bulb as a specimen, an industrial product that is subject to scientific study. The LEDs are all labelled with name, size and colour temperature and arranged in a specific order to accomplish a harmonic radiance. Fireflies come to mind, yet the manmade LEDs obliterate their prefix, taking the "bio" out of bioluminescence.
Collaborating under their studio Humans Since 1982, Stockholm-based design duo Per Emanuelsson and Bastian Bischoff repurpose common objects to create conceptual sculptures and installations that explore the relationship of function and design. Claiming to “arouse curiosity by creating material hints of how the world might be,” the pair are known for projects like Clock Clock, a functioning digital clock composed of 24 analogue alarm clocks, and Surveillance Chandelier, a hanging light fixture composed of surveillance cameras that have been refurbished as lamps. Emanuelsson was raised in Stockholm and studied science before meeting Bischoff in their masters program at the School of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg; Bischoff had studied communication design and was raised in the German countryside.
