THE QEBLAH KITE

The qeblah indicates the direction of Makkah, the orientation point for Muslim prayers. By placing the qeblah on a kite the Saudi artist Ibrahim Abumsmar opens up this fixed element of Islam to a range of interpretations. It suggests the individualization of religious ethics, the wars between Muslims of different denominations, and the impermanence of the collective moral compass.
Ibrahim performed a residency at the Cite des Arts in Paris. Struck by the similarities between the religious mass tourism of Makkah and the pilgrimage of tourists to the iconic locations of Paris he made the present series of photographs and the video.
