About Il Lee

Korean-born, New York-based artist Il Lee’s ballpoint pen creations highlight the power of mark-making. Producing both small-scale prints and large-scale canvases, Lee creates etchings, drawings, and oil works that examine the relationship between negative and positive space and capture a sense of movement. Lee’s etchings, drawings, and oil works examine the relationship between negative and positive space. The artist has said, “When I make my work, I concentrate on the ink and paper and in my hand. That’s what I focus on—and then my brain disappears.” Il Lee is featured in The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s online series “The Artist Project,” and his groundbreaking ballpoint pen works were the subject of a mid-career retrospective at the San Jose Museum of Art.
