"21er Raum: Iman Issa - Material"
21er Haus, Vienna (2015)
Iman Issa is known for her politically inflected and civically engaged conceptual sculpture. Issa was first a student of political science and philosophy in Cairo before switching to painting. Her first works included postcards, posters for public buses, and proposals for kiosks. She then became interested in how memory functions in familiar and unfamiliar spaces in both intimate and public scales. Her “Triptych” series (2009) for example, are three-part sculptures, each featuring an array of objects relating to places of personal significance for the artist. Since 2010, Issa has been working on a series of proposals for alternatives to the public monuments of her childhood that she believes have failed in some way. Issa is also a recipient of the Abraaj Capital Art Prize.
