Karan Singh served as envoy to the Mughal court for his father Amir after Mewar came under Mughal rule. Once Karan became the Maharana, he requested that painting commissions be executed with Mughal traits. This portrait was posthumous, and may have been based on an early representation of the Rana.

Karan Singh served as envoy to the Mughal court for his father Amir after Mewar came under Mughal rule.
