Indrė Šerpytytė’s photographs call to mind a history that is slowly fading from memory. She explores the Cold War, which she experienced first-hand as a child in Lithuania, in deceptively simple photographs. Through these unadorned images, Šerpytytė presents details that reference specific atrocities of the era. The still life series “A State of Silence” showcases the belongings of her father, a government official who was killed in a mysterious accident, the subject of her “indefatigable investigations.” Another body of work, “1944-1991”, looks at the resistance movement through three photographic series. The first shows cut-paper houses on a gray backdrop, the second, images of lush forests, and the third notebooks filled with photographs of houses, variously referencing the homes used as KGB control centers and the “forest brothers” who took to the woods in resistance.
