In 2017, Autograph commissioned Ingrid Pollard to hand-tint a set of modern prints made from 19th century postcards of Jamaica. The original images were taken by Valentine & Sons in the 1890s, prominent makers of landscape and travel photographs. These postcards reveal how a new image of Jamaica was created through photography - and the carefully constructed representation of this transitional period in Jamaica’s history.
For this limited edition, Pollard has selected and enlarged Valentine & Sons' photograph, spending hours hand-tinting each print. Each work is therefore unique, and in the words of the artist, the process "brings a type of life to the images".
Due to the delicate surface of this work, it will be shipped flat in custom packaging. As a result, it may take up to 14 days to dispatch this work.
