About Irina Nakhova

An installation artist based in Soviet Russia, Irina Nakhova addresses the malleable nature of memory in her films, paintings, and photography. In her art, she pursues forgotten narratives of the past and explores the erasure of people from history, a deeply personal subject for the artist, whose grandfather died in the Gulag. “If collective memory can be manipulated and remade, then individual memory, individual archives, are what preserve the history of the country,” the artist, who was selected to represent Russia at the 2015 Venice Biennale, has said.
