Iva Gueorguieva makes large-scale abstract paintings that feature a frenetic mix of overlapping collage, line, shape, and color. At times, figures, fragments of architecture, or mysterious machines seem to emerge from the mix, conjuring an enigmatic narrative or elusive memory. In a 2011 series of paintings inspired by the stories of a former fighter pilot, the chaotic, wild energy of Gueorguieva’s compositions suggests adrenaline and pulsing anxiety, her bold palette of reds evoking blood and the body despite total abstraction.

Gueorguieva’s complex abstract prints are awash with color, movement and texture. Layering cut fabric, paper and paint on the surface of the canvas to create seemingly chaotic compositions, she notes that the action of creating is for her a way of thinking about space and time.
