Jac Martin-Ferrieres, ‘Folk Dancers’, ca. 20, M.S. Rau Antiques

This enchanting oil on canvas was composed by the French painter Jacques Martin-Ferrières. In the stunning scene, village women are clad in vibrant, festive folk dress as they dance and socialize with their children and neighbors. The pinks, peaches, mauves, and sunny yellow hues of the background communicates the warm Mediterranean environment, and work in explicit harmony with the complimentary blue and green tones found in the grass and the sky. Martin-Ferrières' inimitable technique, rich with swift and short brushstrokes of opaque color, reveals the strong influence of his father, Henri Martin, and the legendary Post-Impressionist generation before him.
