About James J. WIlliams III
Taking art-making as his subject matter, James J. William III probes his creative drive through installation, painting, drawing, collage, and photography. Williams’s installation By Request, My Epitaph mimics the layout of a 19th-century art salon and suggests the narcissistic tendencies associated with being an artist. Drawing influence from the artworks, careers, and personalities of artists such as Nan Goldin, Andy Warhol, and Richard Prince, By Request, My Epitaph incorporates every piece of art Williams produced over a period of four years—from sketches to intimate portraits—and reveals his internal struggles with class and ownership. An exploration of the self is again found in Prelude to the Namesake, Part One: James Joseph Williams Senior, which seeks to reveal commonalities in the interests, experiences, and personal possessions of the artist and his grandfather.
