An LA Artist Taps into the 1980s to Visit the Subject of Death
Jamison Carter’s drawings and sculptures are a little bit punk, a little bit pop. Featuring fluorescent pink, yellow, green, blue, and orange stripes of color, they seem to burst like rays of light from walls, floors, and drawings, disrupting the space. Carter toys with traditional approaches to artistic technique, using his chromatic arrays to test various conceits of perspective and color theory. Some of his sculptures, rendered as painted bundles of wooden planks, emanate from piles of black rubble. In earlier works, such as soft sculptures of silicone draping over mirrors, Carter addressed received notions of form and material, and in sometimes-kinetic sculptures of painted wire nets he explored ideas of visibility and distinctions between objects and actions.
