About Jan Kolata

Inviting the element of chance into his practice, Jan Kolata builds up fields of overlapping color, allowing drips and pools of paint to express themselves intuitively and freely. The thin layers he applies create chromatic relationships that can complement, amplify, or mute one another, as well as producing absorbing optical effects. Similar to stain-painter Dan Christensen, Kolata uses diaphanous color in expressive, psychedelic, and jazzy patterns. He accentuates the texture of the paint, allowing the brush bristles to create distinct marks on the surface of his work.
