American artist Jason Berger came of age at the height of the Boston Expressionist movement, which drew influence from the European Expressionists. He studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts under Karl Zerbe, where he encountered the works of the German Expressionists and Chaim Soutine. Inspired by the watercolors of John Singer Sargent and Winslow Homer, while also taking cues from the Old Masters and the emerging modernist styles around him—he studied with Cubist sculptor Ossip Zadkine and met with Georges Braque and Henri Matisse in France—Berger turned to the landscapes around him as subject matter, imbuing them with vivid color. He painted en plein air and even traveled to Normandy to take in and paint the vistas captured by Impressionist master Claude Monet.
