Jean Barol conjured an intriguing underwater world on this exceptionally alluring lusterware charger. A golden-orange crab skitters away from the viewer, while three anemones quietly go with the flow. Coral and seaweed fill the foreground and appear in flame-like contrast to the mysterious deep blue sea. Sea creatures were a particularly popular theme in Art Nouveau ceramics.
