The former owner of the painting, Louis Kaufman, was a classical violinist who became known for recording soundtracks for Hollywood, in films such as Casablanca, The Grapes of Wrath, and Gone with the Wind. He also performed chamber music with Pablo Casals and Jascha Heifetz. Together with his wife Annette, also a musician, they amassed a large art collection, including works by Lurcat and Milton Avery, many of which were donated to the National Gallery. Earl Stendahl opened his first gallery in Los Angeles in 1921, and became one of the most important dealers in modern art on the West Coast.
