Throughout his long, international career, sculptor Jedd Novatt has been bending bronze into open-frame boxes, which he stacks, tips, and interlocks into towers at once rigorously formal and exuberantly playful. Steeped in the history of his medium, he pursues scale, volume, balance, structure, and gravity (or defiance of it), the traditional concerns of sculptors throughout time and across cultures. Novatt uses the box as the basis for all of his sculptures, whose scale has increased significantly over the years. His smaller-scale, earlier work could sit comfortably on the floor or on pedestals. His more recent, monumental structures tower over viewers and command such public spaces as the courtyard of Lever House, New York, and the grounds of Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain. Through elegant engineering, Novatt achieves an uncanny balance between chaos and equilibrium, creating works that simultaneously topple and soar.
