JeeYoung Lee, ‘Maiden Voyage’, 2009, Opiom Gallery

This idea of this installation came to me when I saw the streets covered with gingko tree leaves in fall. Autumn is a time when the year is coming to an end and the fallen leaves announce the passage of time.

My intention was to express the sailing through everyday life as if traveling through the mundane toward something, somewhere, and gradually reaching this goal, little by little. I recalled memories of sailing paper boats in the water when I was little, and I used cardboard to make the one in this piece. The rippled gingko leaves imply waves, and I hung laundry to show that it is in everyday life in which we are gradually going forward.
