About Jeff Grant
Working in sculpture, drawing, and installation, Jeff Grant takes advantage of the creativity necessitated by limitation. By imposing his own restrictions on his practice, as well as by using found objects and appropriated pictures, Grant grapples with what he considers the “over-determination” of forms and images in our society. “My work is untrustworthy but honest,” he says. “It is a study in the co-existence of determined facts and shifting, ambiguous definitions. Solidity is literally and figuratively undermined.” Grant’s works blur their subjects and subvert the intended function of their materials; his drawings of flora and fauna mock scientific accuracy, while his installations offer improbable configurations of nature—toy animals under artificial light, creatures crafted from wood and string, and fake plants balanced in precarious arrangements.
