Part Choctaw and part Cherokee, Jeffrey Gibson produces abstract sculpture, painting, and prints that carry an autobiographical cultural inflection. Gibson, whose influences range from 19th-century Iroquois beadwork to contemporary street art, says that part of his practice “was a reaction to a nostalgic and romantic vision of pre-colonized Native American life.” This is visible in The Future is Present (2011), a work that combines historically artisanal glass beads and quartz with more contemporary, urban objects like barbed wire. Gibson’s painting practice often includes sculpted pigmented silicone, in addition to the simultaneous use of oil, acrylic, and spray paint; he employs these to create layers of patterns in low relief or thick impasto.
