Jemima Kirke, ‘Veronica’, 2009, CMA: Benefit Auction 2016

Jemima Kirke was born in London in 1985 and raised in Manhattan. She received her BFA in painting from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2008, and had a solo show of her portraits at Skylight Projects, NY in 2011. She works quickly in oils to capture portraits of her friends in real time, without preliminary sketches. With influences such as Edouard Manet, Lucian Freud, and Alice Neel, her portraits demonstrate a flatness and deliberate distortion that creates a tension between their representation on canvas and their inner thoughts as they engage the viewer or sit in seeming reverie. She currently resides and works in Brooklyn, NY. Although she is known for her acting on the HBO series Girls, Kirke feels strongly that “My art has always been my top priority and I have far more experience in that field than I do in film.”
