Jennifer Bain
American, b. 1955
Follow

Jennifer Bain has always felt an affinity for still life painting, and considers her own practice a post-modern version of the tradition. Bain, whose studio is located in a garden surrounded by a natural park, paints the flora and fauna that populate her immediate space, augmented by photographs, graphics, textiles, hand-printed papers, and references to botanical illustrations. Bain’s style is a partial reference to the botanical artists of the 17th century, like Maria Sibylla Merian. In her paintings, Bain works with both wet and dry media as well as collage; her subjects are rendered in combinations of outlines, color silhouettes, patterned shapes, and shaded forms and placed against white backgrounds.
