From the artist: "In 1990, there was a fire at the abandoned H. Swoboda & Son tannery at American and George Streets. This former tannery building - still full of huge tanks of the chemicals used in the tanning process – was a Superfund site, designated for cleanup by the federal government. The six-alarm fire that engulfed the building sent out thick black and yellowish-green smoke and forced neighbors to evacuate. This was the first of many fires I witnessed in the neighborhood, and was the first image I made of Northern Liberties."
