About the work
Jenny Abell
American, b. 1952
Follow

Jenny Abell’s collages incorporate culturally and geographically specific materials to reflect on the environments that inspire the works. Abell defers to fantastical imagery oriented toward ideas of escape, evinced by the recurring motif of small birds with human heads. Rendered onto elements from books, however, her collages are grounded in the real world. In a recent series inspired by a trip to Senegal, Abell incorporated maps of Dakar and colored sands purchased at a market to imbue her works with a sense of place. The otherwise abstract forms and colors are likewise influenced by the architecture and palate of Senegal.
