About Jeongwon Lee

Jeongwon Lee sculpts flawless cylindrical vessels that recall tree-like organic forms. Using oxidation firings to enhance his piece’s blue-green glaze—much like traditional Korean Goryeo celadon—and employing standardized forms, Lee toys with the creation of new spaces and structures through addition and subtraction. Organic lines and extruded forms emerge out of the original piece, subtly altering it and imbuing fixed, three-dimensional objects with dynamic potential. While Lee’s transformations appear natural, there is a sense of perfection and precision to them, a principle that is in keeping with the neo-Confucian adoration of pure, white porcelain.
