About Jerry Jofen

Best known for his work in New York’s underground film scene in the 1960s, Jerry Jofen also produced paintings and abstract collages composed of discarded scraps of paper, string, and other found materials that he stapled conspicuously together. Jofen fled Poland with his family in the 1940s before settling in New York, where he ultimately collaborated with Jack Smith, Ken Jacobs, and David Brooks, among others. Smith’s seminal film, Flaming Creatures, was first screened in Jofen’s Chelsea loft. Jofen’s collages have been compared with the work of Kurt Schwitters.

Polish-American, 1925-1993
