San Francisco–based artist Jessica Snow explores the compositional possibilities of color and geometry through paintings and works on paper that navigate the relationship between positive and negative space. Working in a hard-edged style, Snow creates diverse compositions in which colors function as form. Her allover and minimalist-tinged paintings suggest a wide array of historical influences, from early twentieth-century biomorphic abstraction to postwar Color-field painting and Minimalism. Snow understands her work as existing between Expressionism and rationalist systems. “I see my art as being continually at play between order and chaos or between systems that work and those that break down,” she has said. “That seems to be how my mind works…between order and chaos, between logic and emotion.”
