About Jitka Hanzlová

Whether focusing on the forests in her native Czech Republic, women she encountered in Europe, America, and North Africa, or her childhood village of Rokytník, Jitka Hanzlová photographs all of her subjects in a sensitive and meditative way. Her work is imbued with a sense of wistfulness, stemming from her awareness of the atmospheric effects of light, her isolated framing of her subjects, and her strong sense of history. As she describes: “The path that I take is a path back to look into the future.”

Czech, b. 1958, Náchod, Czech Republic, based in Essen, Germany
