About Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige

The filmmaker and artist duo, based in Beirut and Paris, are notorious for questioning the stakes of image production and circulation in the Middle East. Interested in rethinking the cultural imaginaries of the region and the construction of identity and memory, they have been active since the late 1990s. Their practice encompasses moving images, photography, installations, and publications. Their “Faces” series (2009) documented the worn posters that cover the walls of Beirut featuring men who died during the civil wars, while their documentary The Lebanese Rocket Society (2012) explores, in conjunction with a series of installations, the curiosities of the 1960s space project in relation to modernism and utopia.

Lebanese, b. 1969, Lebanon, based in Beirut & Paris
