Joe Brubaker, ‘Jack’, 2014, Seager Gray Gallery

Drawing inspiration from craft traditions around the world—from aboriginal wooden heads to Mexican santo figures—Bay area artist Joe Brubaker creates totemic sculptures from carved wood and reclaimed materials. Referring to the story of Pinocchio, Brubaker explains “[It’s] the Gepetto experience—making a real boy. There’s something very interesting about stepping into this carved wooden figure tradition, which has been happening among humans for thousands of years.”
