Joe Fleming, ‘Escalator’, 2014, Waddington's

Joe Fleming’s paintings are decidedly sculptural, representing his experimentation with form, texture, materiality, perspective and possibility. Fleming employs industrial polycarbonate – altering his surfaces that contribute a screen-like translucence and allow for the interplay of light and shadows. He juxtaposes gestural abstraction with graphic silhouettes of color. The transparency of the polycarbonate intensifies the viewer’s experience, dissolving the boundary between where the painting ends and the wall begins.

Fleming has exhibited internationally for over 15 years and has lectured at various universities in Canada, the United States and South East Asia since 1993. His paintings are included in many public and private collections and the artist has participated in several international art fairs around the world. Joe Fleming currently works and resides in Toronto.
