About Joe Novak

For more than 30 years, Joe Novak has been exploring the infinite tonal nuances of color and its interaction with light, in his abstract paintings, prints, drawings, assemblages, and mixed-media works. Spare and subtle, his paintings recall Mark Rothko’s, with their glowing, feathery fields of color. His works range from jewel-like to large-scale, minimalist and monochromatic to gestural and multihued. From 1992-95, he collaborated with composer Jim Oliver on a project titled, “Light Emanations,” in which he projected shifting lights onto his paintings, and created a complementary soundscape, to investigate the ways in which light and sound alter our perception of color. Describing his approach to elements at once fundamental and immaterial, Novak states: “For me it is about having a vision, doing the work, being open, taking risks, respecting the materials and listening to the eye.”
