Joe Ramiro Garcia
American, b. 1966
Follow

In his evocative paintings and collages, Joe Ramiro Garcia mixes recognizable and imaginative images, representation and abstraction, to create open-ended narratives reflecting our subjective view of the world. As he describes: “Although I employ images from cartoons, animals, and objects in my work, I do not believe in creating a specific narrative. […] My interest in using familiar and even commercial imagery is in our ability to reanimate and project our own story onto them.” Drawing from popular culture and his own musings and experiences, he pieces together expressionistic, abstract passages and such disparate images as taxidermic animal heads, signs, basketballs, and cartoon characters into compositions both harmonious and discordant. Ramiro Garcia characterizes his approach as a cross between Pop Art and Expressionism, providing familiar points of entry into his surprising juxtapositions, into which viewers may read their own meanings.
