Johanna Calle, ‘Chambacu Albalá’, 2006-2007, Casas Riegner

The pattern on this series is based on Mudejar style ornaments present in Cartagena’s historic district. Lines are formed by words that refer to indigenous terms that slowly integrated into the Spanish language. During the time of Spanish conquistadors the Spanish language had a prominent Arab influence, hence its reference thorough the formal composition of the piece.
