Johanna Grawunder’s furniture glows, quite literally, from within. In pieces like the pink acrylic and LED mobiles she designed for the restaurant at the Museum of Art and Design, Grawunder combines form, function, and light. Her plastic and metal compositions call to mind the Minimalist slabs of John McCracken and Dan Flavin’s florescent lights, while capturing essences as ethereal as the glow of a Southern California sunset. “When I'm picking colors for my furniture pieces, I look at the greens, blues, pinks, reds and grays in the Pantone book, and I'm always thinking that there should be another one in the section,” Grawunder has said. “Well, the colors are there; you just have to put light with them.” Her mastery of color should come as no surprise—she worked with Ettore Sottsass, the founder of the Memphis Group of designers famed for their fluorescent pieces, for 16 years.
