About John Dubrow

John Dubrow bases all of his paintings on drawings he makes onsite, whether of people or landscapes. Many of his works depict familiar subjects—as in his series featuring street views of New York—or serve as semi-autobiographical records of people and places he encounters. His style is characterized by the use of bright colors and muted palettes in striking juxtapositions, and broad marks applied directly onto the canvas with a palette knife rather than a brush. As his career has progressed, Dubrow’s paintings have turned increasingly abstract as his forms become more reduced.

American, b. 1958, Salem, Massachusetts, based in New York, New York
