About John Koch
American realist John Koch painted upper class New York City life. His popular 1954 painting The Cocktail Party showcases signature elements of Koch's staged scenes: precisely arranged figures (including the artist himself) inhabit a luxurious setting but are captured in a strange and quiet stillness. His pictures are as much about the various interpersonal relationships within his scenes as they are about his own relationship to figures and scenarios depicted. But whether portraying a cocktail party or a moment between artist and nude, as in The Sculptor (1964), Koch was a master of light and form during a time dominated by modern abstractions.
