John Mack has lived in and traveled Mexico for a decade, taking black-and-white photographs of luminaries and everyday citizens, urban and rural landscapes, public life and private moments. In the spirit of Robert Frank and Walker Evans, Mack is attuned to telling details and surprising juxtapositions, through which larger narratives are suggested. For example, in his photograph of a street corner in Taxco, Guerrero, the edge of a building creates a stark divide between a beggar and a schoolgirl in knee-high socks; in another, he photographs a group of old men who seem to blend into a mural behind them. Apart from his Mexico series, Mack takes color landscape photographs around the world, though the aesthetic is markedly different: the works often have a composed grandeur, as opposed to the intimate, incidental feel of his black-and-white pictures.
