Toronto-based artist John Monteith takes a constructivist approach to art making, building up layers of small shapes that coalesce into larger wholes. A skewed sense of depth and scale serve as the foundation for his work, which includes photography, video, text-based art, and painting. In his portraits, for example, he creates a composite image of a subject by photographing the person at set intervals over an extended period of time; the passage of time and signs of nonverbal communication are recorded in the resulting image. Monteith’s “At Night All Cats Are Grey” series consists of abstract compositions made from wax and black pigment. Employing a geometric, formalist vocabulary, the series addresses complicated notions of urban development and utopian architecture.
