John Sloan, ‘Self Portrait’, 1890, Delaware Art Museum

Working from a book, A Manual of Oil Painting by John Collier, Sloan taught himself the basics of oil painting when he was 19 years old. Probably his earliest effort, this Self-Portrait was painted on a window shade and stretched, later, by his father.
