Born in Helena, Arkansas; Johnny Taylor grew up in and around Memphis, Tennessee. Early inspirations were MAD Magazine, Star Wars, and the rock band KISS—an art/film/music troika of influences that would remain consistent. Taylor began painting as a student at the University of Memphis (BFA, Art History, 1996).

Bright colored blocks compose his acrylic and mixed media paintings. He enjoys the look and feel of loose, graffiti-like marks, text, and “noise” against these vividly hued planes. Usually he paints with layers, with each new layer showing a bit of the one beneath, either by transparency, the masking of certain areas, or by a scraping away of recent layers. Often this process yields unexpected colors and forms. His inspirations are often drawn from advertising images and glyphs, the visual shorthand of contemporary culture.

This artwork is wired and ready to hang. The sides of the artwork are painted, and it does not require framing. A certificate of authenticity and hanging hardware is included.

About Johnny Taylor

The paintings of Los Angeles-based artist Johnny Taylor explore the visual cacophony we encounter every day without taking the time to really observe. Working in acrylic, marker, screen print, and spray paint on canvas or wood, Taylor finds inspiration in the visual detritus of the urban landscape: graffiti, murals, hand-painted signs, graphic design, vintage advertising, store displays, and package design. The resulting works call to mind Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Stuart Davis, Andy Warhol, and Jean-Michel Basquiat and the regional arts of the American South. “I paint what I see,” the artist has said. “My practice of applying layer upon layer and the subsequent masking and tearing away of those layers to reveal many previous layers is informed by the abandoned billboards peeling layers, revealing bits of images that came before, scraps of its history visible all at once.”
